Medication abortion (also known as the abortion pill) is a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy, typically up to 12 weeks. It involves taking two medications:
The process usually involves cramping and bleeding, which are normal parts of the body passing the pregnancy. Most people feel relief once the process is complete, which typically happens within 24 hours of taking misoprostol.
The abortion pill is a safe and reliable way to end an early pregnancy. When taken as directed, it works about 98% of the time for people who are up to 10–12 weeks pregnant. After taking the second medication, misoprostol, most people pass the pregnancy within a few hours. Cramping and bleeding are usually the most intense during this part of the process. In some cases (about 2–5%), a second dose of medication or a quick in-clinic procedure may be needed to finish the abortion. That’s completely normal and nothing to worry about.
The abortion pill is a very safe option and has been used by millions of people around the world for more than 20 years. In the U.S., it’s been safely used by hundreds of thousands of people since the FDA approved it back in 2000.
There’s no proof that taking the abortion pill impacts your ability to get pregnant later on. Your fertility usually comes back quickly—sometimes just a few weeks after the abortion—so you can still have a healthy pregnancy in the future when you’re ready.
The price for the provider consultation, medication package, post pregnancy test, shipping, and on-going provider support, costs a flat rate of $400.
A medication abortion, also known as the abortion pill, involves taking two FDA-approved pills to end a pregnancy, usually up to 12 weeks along. The first pill is taken either at a clinic or at home, and the second one is taken at home within 72 hours. After the second pill, cramping and bleeding—similar to a heavy period—usually start within a few hours. Many people choose this method because it offers privacy and flexibility to do it on their own time and in their own space.
A procedural abortion, sometimes called an in-office or aspiration abortion, is done in clinic by a trained medical provider. The actual procedure only takes about 5 minutes, roughly the same as a pap smear. The provider uses a quiet, handheld suction device to gently empty the uterus, similar to having your period all at once. The whole appointment usually takes less than 90 minutes. One main difference: with this option, the pregnancy is over before you leave the clinic.
Most people don’t need an ultrasound. However, we suggest one if there’s a higher chance of an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside the uterus) or if the pregnancy might be too far along for us to treat safely. If you do need an ultrasound, we may need your results before we can start treatment.
